dc.description.abstract The Damara Orogen in Namibia and the north-western Richtersveld is one of the best preserved Late Proterozoic/Early Palaeozoic Orogenic belts in the world. It comprises an "inland branch" and a "coastal branch" (Fig. 1. 1). The coastal branch is subdivided into the northern Kaoko Belt and the southern Gariep Belt, which has been linked with the Saldanha Belt of the south-western Cape Province (Clifford, 1967; Stowe et al., 1984). Because of the remoteness and harshness of the area north and south of the Orange River, few detailed studies have been undertaken in the southern coastal branch of the Damara Orogen. The major aim of this study is to gain understanding of the depositional history of the Gariep Group and the tectonics which controlled it, as well as to understand the collisional history of the Gariep Belt. It forms a contribution to our present understanding of Late Precambrian/Early Palaeozoic tectonics and sedimentation en_US
