Investigation of University of Namibia distance learners and off-campus library services

Abstract

Describes and presents the results of a questionnaire survey undertaken at the University of Namibia to identify the information needs and problems facing distance learners. A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed to all distance learners with 106 returns. Examines the frequency use of the information centres and the information sources used by the respondents. The study found that a majority of distance learners make use of the University of Namibia information centres for their information effectively in pursuing their studies

Informal channels of information such as former students, fellow students and colleagues at work show to be quite useful, but printed information sources, especially books and periodicals, are indispensable. A large number of distance learners felt that access to the Internet is very important for their studies. Suggests that the services of the library should be given more publicity and that co-operation between academic and public libraries should be encouraged
