dc.description.abstract Abstract by author: en_US
dc.description.abstract The method used to determine the botanical composition and ground cover percentage is systematic step-point sampling. Sample points are determined at random by using a standard length of metal rod along the camp's halfway transect. The species botanical composition is sorted into the groups; Perennial grasses, Annual grasses, Trees, Bush & Shrubs and Herbs. This results are interpreted to indicate the veld condition en_US
dc.description.abstract The second more intrusive method of monitoring the veld productivity was done, by harvesting randomly placed quadrants at regular intervals along the same halfway transect as before. Only grass is harvested, cut at ground level and sorted into palatable and unpalatable groups according to Muller (1984). The grass is Oven- dried, grass yield is determined, and the carrying capacity (indicated by the amount of feed available per camp) of each camps is calculated. This helps in determining the stocking rate of livestock. Samples were taken to the laboratory for analysis of nutrient content to distiquish [sic] between the palatable and unpalatable grass- species en_US
