There is concern in Namibia given the worrying upward trend in youth related issues. There is a growing need for access to education in order to address social issues such as vulnerability to illness and HIV/AIDS related infections, unemployment, poverty, violence and adolescent pregnancies
The research investigated the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) television programs and identified programs targeting youth aged 15-30. Thus, the investigation examined the content of these programs ascertaining whether they included any social messages, which raised awareness and addressed problems faced by the youth in Namibia. Further, the study attempted to determine whether the NBC, which is the only national broadcaster, achieves its mandate of informing, educating and entertaining the youth
The researcher used the linear model of information needs, the gratification theory and the reinforcement approach as sound theoretical frameworks. A quantitative approach was adopted, using self-administered questionnaires. A sample size of 100 youths with equal representation of both genders was drawn from the various youth centres. Findings from the study serve to encourage and stimulate dialogue on youth problems through relevant and effective television programming and assist those working in this critical area in framing effective work plans
Key findings were that 67 percent of the sample respondents around Windhoek feel that youth programs are important whilst, 65 percent indicated that the youth programs broadcasted by NBC television are not relevant to their needs. There was no evidence that NBC has a policy statement addressing youth issues nor were there any guidelines as to how youth programs are created. The response shows that over half, 58 percent of the respondents considered content of the programs aired by NBC as an important aspect in a youth program. In light of the above mentioned the study is timely and relevant
