Protecting Namibia's marine environment

Abstract

Abstract provided by author:This dissertation sets out to investigate how Namibian law protects the marine environment and its resources to prevent pollution

Existing environmental protection can be found in outdated legislation inherited from Namibia's former ruler South Africa. These pieces of legislation provided and still provide the backdrop against which threats to Namibia's marine environment are protected

Government recognized a need to amend and or appeal many of these statutes mainly as they provided an in sufficient degree of protection, due chiefly to the fact that marine environmental protection can be found in various pieces of legislation in the responsibility of different Ministries that may or may not be equipped or skilled to deal with marine environmental protection

At issue is whether statutes in place provided a mechanism be it legal or otherwise that would afford sufficient protection against the onslaughts of pollution within the marine environment

Consideration will also be given to new development within this field that would provide for alternatives both legal and practical, in an attempt to ensure protection of the marine environment
